Why are we so concerned about keeping away from "gross" insects when in a few decades we could be ordering mealworm pizza from the restaurant across the street? Why do we think insects are so disgusting when we are already eating some in our food? If you didn't know that... well, let's start with what's in the food we eat everyday.
Our everyday food is filled with bugs- we eat at least 500grams of bugs per year. Chocolate contains 60 insect parts per 100g, peanut butter has 30 insect parts per 100g, there are 5 fruit-fly eggs and 1-2 larvae per 250g of fruit juice. Not only these, but also tomato soup noodles, and basically all processed foods. If the insect part itself isn't in the food, then there might be natural dye made of crushed bugs used to color the food. So if we can eat so much chocolate, why can't we eat the bugs in them whole?
We all eat chicken, pork, and beef. We've never thought these as gross, but do we think insects are gross when they are actually healthier than the other types of meat we eat. The animals that the meat comes from may have diseases, like the swine flu from pigs, but insects have no harmful viruses that could cause humans diseases. They have protein and other minerals in them, like other meat, and are also rich in calories; 1 kg of grasshoppers has the same amount of calories as 10 hotdogs or 6 hamburgers.
Insects aren't that "gross" if you think about it. Actually, people who aren't eating insects are the minority, 80% of the world's population already eats insects. So why don't we give it try too? It will only be a matter of time before insects will become a normal ingredient in many dishes.

ReplyDeleteI like your title. It is very compelling and drags me in (also very cognitive ahha) I also like how you asked the reader questions like 'why would you think insects are gross when you already have it in your diet.' I also like your multimedia. Great job!
