pH stands for potential of Hydrogen. We use something called the pH scale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is.
The scale measures values from 0 all the way up to 14. Acids are found between 0 and 7. Bases are from 7 to 14. Distilled water is 7 (right in the middle).
The pH of a substance is found using an indicator. An indicator is a substance or chemical that changes color in the presence of an acid and/or a base.
We used the Universal Indicator and the Full Range pH Strips to find the pH of different substances. The Universal Indicator we used ranged from pH 4.0 to pH 11.0. It was not very accurate as there were limitations. The Full Range pH Strips were more accurate as it showed all numbers from 0 to 14. It had 4 coloured boxes on it, which changed colour when put on a substance. It was more accurate as we could find the pH by looking at the exact colours.
The pH scale is an logarithmic scale. This means that the difference between two acids will become the power of ten. For example, a substance of pH2 is a hundred times stronger than a substance with pH4, because the difference of 4 and 2 is 2, so it will become 10 to the power of 2, which is a hundred.
An acid is a compound that produces Hydrogen ions(H+) when dissolved in water. The stronger the acid is, the more Hydrogen ions formed.
A base is a compound that produces Hydroxide ions(OH-) when dissolved in water. The stronger the base, the more Hydroxide ions formed.
